A director and deviser; I use the field of community psychology and theatre as a means to create measurable
change within communities. I am passionate about influencing public policy - and the Iowa State Fair.

Philosophy

My family is the Iowan, non-Greek, version of the family in My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding. Our entire extended family lives on the same block. We have family dinner once a week where everyone piles into my grandma’s house to celebrate something – whether it is a holiday, a milestone, someone got a job, or it’s a Monday; we find a reason to celebrate together.

This model of community living is my inspiration when I envision theatre. I look at theatre and I see an ecosystem: I see people coming together to raise each other up and hold one another accountable for responsibilities and actions. I see a welcome safe haven for the mind, body, and spirit.

I look at community-driven theatre through an ecological lens where systemic change is at the microsystem of the production at large. In looking at the individual level of change being produced, you look at the performers. Those who are actors are reaping the benefits of personal individual growth through drama. A production not only creates a show, but it also creates strength, confidence, and resilience within a self. And, when the theatre is by and for a community; when the individuals grow, the community grows. All theatre I want to produce is based in truth and research. By conducting research within the community I am operating in and choosing the themes of the shows being tackled with community members, I want to use new theatre work to create legislative change.

I am interested in the creation of prevention programs, engaging in action-oriented research, and influencing public policy through new theatre work. I want to use theatre as a form of advocacy, awareness, civic engagement, and community building.

 

Biography

In 2014 I moved from the cornfields of Iowa to pursue an undergraduate degree at DePaul University in Chicago. In June of 2018 I graduated with a double major in Theatre Arts with a Directing concentration and Community Psychology, and a double minor in Management and Community Service Studies.

During my studies, I served as the Artistic intern at Collaboraction and Erasing the Distance, and worked as the Research and Programming intern at Prevent Child Abuse America.

While serving as a teaching assistant for programming in Stateville Correctional Center and Cook County Jail, I collaborated as the lead deviser and assistant director for my passion play, Once a Felon, Always a Felon, produced as a staged reading (The Theatre School at DePaul University).

For my senior thesis project, I devised, directed, and self-produced Fourth Wave Bunny, an immersive experience and public conversation about fourth wave feminism through the lens of a Playboy Bunny (The Theatre School at DePaul University).

During my time at DePaul, assistant directing credits include Long Way Home (Chicago Children's Choir with The Q Brothers), Kilgore? and the able space (The Theatre School at DePaul University). Dramaturgy credits include Born Yesterday (Jeff winner for Best Production and nominated for best director; Remy Bumppo).

In my spare time, I served on the executive board for DemonTHON, raising money for Lurie Children’s Hospital, and was the Philanthropy and Community Service Chair for my sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi.

Post Graduation:
I'm currently the audience development intern at Victory Gardens Theater and interned at the DirectorsLabChicago 2018. I’m also directing for Collaboraction's Peacebook Festival and assistant directing for Nothing Without A Company's New Play Festival.
